Many people think visible cracks or sagging floors are the first signs of trouble, however, water intrusion often happens silently and over time. Crawlspaces and basements are especially vulnerable after heavy rains or clogged gutters.
What to do: Check your downspouts, slope your landscaping away from the home, and consider a free waterproofing inspection if you’ve noticed musty smells, pooling water, or dampness in your crawlspace or basement.
2. Not All Cracks Are the Same
A hairline crack in your drywall? Maybe not a big deal. A long horizontal crack in your block wall? That’s a different story. Many people ignore signs of foundation movement until the repairs become more complex and costly.
What to do: Monitor cracks over time with tape or a crack monitor. If a crack widens or changes shape, call a professional. Early intervention often means simpler, less expensive repairs.
3. Most Structural Problems Don’t Fix Themselves
